FAQs

You need to keep your tax records at least 3 years from the date you filed your original return. There are situations when you need to keep records longer. Call me to discuss your specific situation.
There are many reasons why the government would send a letter or notice. Send me a copy to review. You can upload it via my secure portal. Once we’ve determined the purpose of the correspondence we can decide an appropriate course of action.
You can deduct medical expenses if you are able to itemize deductions on your tax return. You can deduct only the amount that is more than a percentage of your adjusted gross income. In 2020 this percentage was 7.5%. A better way to pay for medical expenses is with a tax advantaged account such as a health savings account (HSA), flexible spending arrangement (FSA), health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), or medical savings account (MSA).
Home improvements are not tax deductible on your income tax return. That doesn’t mean they do not have a tax benefit. The cost of these improvements add to the basis of your home. Basis is the amount of your investment for tax purposes. The greater your basis, the lower the profit when you sell your home.
You can deduct student loan interest on your income tax return. There are tax credits available for qualified education expenses.
Tax deductions lower your taxable income for the year. Tax credits can reduce the amount of tax you owe dollar for dollar.
We will review the form to determine the impact to your tax return. Not every form will affect the tax return. If necessary we’ll file an amended return.
You can deduct expenses related to the part of your home used for business if you meet the requirements.
A sole proprietor without employees and who doesn’t file any excise or pension plan tax returns does not need an EIN. You would use your social security number as your taxpayer identification number. However, there is nothing that would prevent you from applying for an EIN if you desired.
We’re here to help you resolve your tax problems and put an end to the misery that the IRS can put you through.
